Well, it’s going around. Like it does each year. So why are people so surprised when they get sick? Instead, be proactive in your health and make sure you’re well stocked with support when and where sickness does strike.
And it will, no matter what you do.
Besides Elderberry, Thyme is my #1 go to for all colds, flu, digestive and respiratory issues. I even rely on it for mental support. Yeah, one stop shop there – Thyme does it all.
Ok, not everything. But most.
“Thyme’s volatile oil constituents, especially thymol, are antimicrobial against different kinds of bacteria including those involved in upper respiratory infections. Choose thyme for “mucousy” respiratory conditions with productive coughs (rather than dry coughs). Thyme’s antimicrobial, antiviral, expectorant, anticatarrhal, and lung protective qualities are used by herbalists to support resolution of cold and flu, as well as other lower and upper respiratory tract infections.” –Herbal Academy Avoid medicinal amounts in pregnancy.
Below are strong recipes to support speeding healing and healthy organ function when those nasty bugs hit. These are appropriate for children ages 6 and over; dilute with additional carrier oil by 3/4 or use 3/4 less essential oils for children under 6. Check with your physician before use if pregnant or nursing. Also, these are for external use only. I’ll post again on internal usage of thyme with teas, infusions and tinctures but for now – external only.

Respiratory Thyme Bomb:
1/2 cup cold pressed virgin coconut oil
20 drops Thyme essential oil (like this one)
10 drops Thieves essential oil (find that here)
5 drops Lemongrass essential oil (try this one)
5 drops Peppermint essential oil (grab that here)
5 drops Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil (I like this one)
Gently warm coconut oil until melted but not hot. Pour into a lidded wide mouth glass container (like these), drop in all of the oils and stir gently until fully incorporated. Place lid on and secure, then let stand at room temp until solidified. Massage 1/4 teaspoon (children ages 6-12) or 1/2 teaspoon (children 12+ & adults) over chest, upper back and bottoms of feet, morning and evening, when respiratory ailments set in.

My daughter hates the smell and taste of black licorice. Which, unfortunately, is what Fennel smells and tastes like. Unfortunate because fennel is one of the best digestive remedies along with ginger. Yeah, she also hates ginger. Both of which are oils in my favorite stomach aid, DiGize. Also, we don’t use things like that Pink goop because guess what? It actually makes her throw up even more.
Soooo…
When her stomach is on the fritz – whether it’s viral or psychological – this blend works wonders. She can keep a roller with her and apply as needed but usually one roll over her belly and she’s good.

10ML Roller Bottle (like these)
10 drops Thyme EO
10 drops Peppermint EO
5 drops Lemongrass EO
Don’t have those? See links in the recipe above to get some.
In a nutshell, why these oils? Without going into a ridiculous amount of plant and medicinal jargon here are a few simple reasons why these oils are in this blend: (Plus, you already read about the properties of thyme above so no need to restate it)
Besides being wonderful for respiratory ailments, thyme is perfect for soothing digestive issues as well. Helping to eliminate microbes or bad bacteria while keeping the good, it’s lemony scent is herbal and light. Peppermint is a classic digestion soother, reducing nausea and dispelling gas. Lemongrass contains a component called citral that helps to digest food and it’s boost of lemon freshness often dispels upset stomachs when strong odors are the cause.
Mental clarity issues and worrisome thoughts: let’s see, every single person I know has these at some point or another. Keep a little bottle of help nearby.

Again, thyme comes to the rescue, this time to support mental fatigue, anxiousness and strong emotions. This blend can be combined in a roller bottle to swipe over your wrists, temples and shoulders anytime, anywhere or even better, diffused.
Thyme’s lemony and herbal scent help to ground and support relaxation as well as boost mental capacity and eliminate brain fatigue. Tangerine contains esters and aldehydes which are sedating and calming to the nervous system. When applied or diffused with thyme, it can help soothe emotions such as grief, anger and shock.
