Under the Tree: Dream Pillow

The Dreamer

Have you heard of dream pillows? Long before electronic diffusers, little cloth bags were stuffed with fragrant herbs and tied closed or sewn shut. Then, placed inside or under pillows in order that their scent would help one to fall asleep, stay asleep, and dream a variety of things depending on the herbs inside.

Often used for those in illness or recovering from injury to assist in deep and restful sleep, these little pouches can be very useful still today!

Pick up a pretty bag like this one or make your own if you’re crafty. Snag a book about herbal dream pillows and stuff the pillow with essential oil dripped herbs for the best night sleep! There’s a wide range of ideas so just do a little search or flip through a book like the one shown. Need some help? Grab one of my favorite recipes below!

Items you’ll need:
  • Dried fragrant herbs like rose petals, jasmine, lavender, and hops
  • Young Living essential oils
  • Small linen, cotton or pretty cloth bag with drawstrings or the ability to be sewn closed
  • Recipes for a variety of pillows
  • Optional: a small book or booklet on dream pillows

This recipe comes from the author of Making Herbal Dream Pillows, Jim Long. It’s very simple and as noted by the herbalist who wrote it, “This one is meant specifically to help one relax as they sleep, without dreams. It also works well to ease nightmares.”

Restful Sleep Blend

Gently combine all herbs in a large bowl and toss to mix. Additionally, add 1-2 drops of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil to the mix and toss to combine all. Pack into a small breathable cloth bag and tie or sew shut. Place inside your pillow and get ready for some deep, restful sleep!

Package your gift with a sweet bottle of lavender or cedarwood as well! Both oils are perfect to settle into a deep sleep. Click the bottle to order or learn how to become a member.
